GLA Math Week 2016

DAY 1 – Tuesday January 19th, 2016

Today students and staff were excited to begin this year’s GLA Math Café week!  Our grades 3-7 have been assigned the task of creating their own restaurant.  They were asked to come up with a restaurant name and brainstorm a menu.  Students had a great time using their creative side to come up with delicious dishes to serve their customers while coming up with a reasonable price list.  They took a closer look at adding and subtracting decimals, which will be used quite a bit when dealing with the financial side of their restaurants.  We look forward to a week filled with creative fun mixed in with a learning edge in the different math concepts explored throughout the year.

DAY 2 – Wednesday January 20th, 2016Today our students got to do some shopping!   Students first had to make a list of ingredients that they needed for each of their menu items.  Once they completed this task, they were assigned an expense budget.  Students then had to get their bargain-hunting hats on and do some ‘shopping’ using many store flyers.  Students had a great time comparing prices from various store locations and doing their best to stay within their budget.  Students were also given an introductory lesson on tax and how it affected the cost of their items and how to convert this percentage into a concrete number that would be added to their total sum.  It was a great real-world introduction into the spending world!

DAY 3- Thursday January 21st, 2016

Today our grades 3-6 continued with a blueprint of their restaurant layout.  Students were taught or reviewed the concepts of area and perimeter and used these lessons to create the layout of their restaurant on a piece of chart paper.  Students got to experiment combining shapes to form various-sized counters and tables to add their own creative edge to each restaurant design.  We are anxious to see the final product of all the work they have put into every aspect of their restaurant design.

Day 4 – Friday Jan 22- Today the students conducted surveys to see what would be a big hit food item on their menus. The students learned how to create proper bar graphs with a title, labels, choices and scale. The students learned about bias, and how to read bar graphs to determine what is most liked and what is least liked.

Day 5 – Monday Jan 25- Fractions, fractions fractions! The students practiced their fraction skills by decorating cake toppers for some very difficult customers. The students enjoyed the challenge of trying to find equivalent fractions to fulfil the orders that were given, and decorate the cake tops with perfection! Big congrats to the restaurants!

Day 6 – Tuesday Jan 24 The students ran their mock restaurant today! It was a great success and they brought in a lot of revenue, and very happy guests left. The grade 1 and 2 students joined later to enjoy some refreshments, and apply the concepts of money that they learned earlier in the week. Congrats to all the students for a week of a hard work and LOTS of fun.
