Arts and Crafts

At Guiding Light Academy, we creatively integrate visual arts into all subject areas including math, science, music, social studies, and literacy.

Learning with visual arts, promotes and encourages creative thinking, while at the same time reinforces academic learning in a fun, less structure, and relaxed learning environment. By incorporating various elements of design including textures, patterns, lines, balance, colours and contrast, children are able to connect their own learning through personal and creative exploration. Some specific art projects in the past have included painted tiles, decorated framework, and painted flower pots.

Through a creative application, children develop a higher level of respect for others unique learning style and a stronger ability to communicate and process information. Creative learning also stimulates curiosity, which we believe is an important dimension when it comes to learning and problem solving.

“Arts education aids students in skills needed in the workplace: flexibility, the ability to solve problems and communicate, the ability to learn new skills, to be creative and innovative, and to strive for excellence.” – Joseph M. Calahan, Director of Cooperate Communications, Xerox Corporation
